Key FA Cup Fixtures To Set Reminders For
The fifth round
of the FA Cup takes place the weekend of the 18th February, and
there’s plenty of stake for the teams that have managed to make it to this
point. From non-league Sutton United to the Premier League big-hitters like
Tottenham and Manchester City, there’s no room for error as they seek to lift
that famous trophy at Wembley in May. Here’s a little preview of some of the
games to watch out for – don’t forget to use SportApp, the football reminder
app, to offer alerts in advance of all the fixtures.
Sutton United vs Arsenal
What a great tie
for non-league team, Sutton United, who overcome Leeds United in the fourth
round to get further in the FA Cup than they’ve ever been
before. Sutton’s team is a combination of professionals and semi-professional
players, and many of them will never have played against footballers of Premier
League quality before. But the FA Cup is known for its occasional shocks. If
Arsene Wenger succumbs to temptation to play a weakened squad to rest his
first-team players, the Sutton team could well overcome the odds to slay the
Premier League giant.
Blackburn vs Manchester United
What a fall from
grace it’s been for Blackburn Rovers. They were Premier League constants
throughout the 1990s (even winning it in 1994/95), but after being relegated at
the turn of the millennium, they’ve been up and down a multitude of times.
They’re currently languishing in 23rd in the EFL Championship, and
will come up against a formidable opponent in Jose Mourinho’s Manchester
United. United will be looking to retain the FA Cup, a feat only managed a
handful of times over the years. Mourinho’s squad options are some of the best
around, and second-string players like Bastian Schweinsteiger, last year’s
final scorer Jesse Lingard and wonderkid Marcus Rashford could all get a start.

Millwall vs Leicester City
Leicester City’s
league form has been terrible this season – but a decent run in the cup could
help cement Ranieri’s position and save him from the sack if the champions end
up being relegated just a year after lifting the trophy. That said, Millwall
have already dumped Premier League opposition out of the cup – they beat
Watford 1-0 in January to make it through to the fifth round. Will Neil Harris’
League One team pull off another FA Cup shock?
Fulham vs Tottenham Hotspur
With five teams
from the capital still in the draw, there was always a high chance of the fifth
round producing a London derby. Fulham will welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Craven
Cottage, where they’ll hope they can produce a shock to make it to the next
round. The atmosphere will certainly be fiery, as it always is with derby
games. It’s not been long since Fulham were actually in the Premier League,
having been relegated in 2014 – they still retain the players capable of going
much further in the famous FA Cup.
